5th Grade GT Math
Our Wall of Fusion:
Each new mathematical Domain is introduced through a task the kids read and determine which math concepts and skills are necessary for working through it. As we say, "Where's the MATH?"
Taking Data, Finding Ratios, and Displaying Them on Infographs
To understand ratio language and identifying ratios, we took a survey and then worked to create infographs based on the results.
More Ratios - Building Them!
Calling All Mathletes: It's Olympiad Time!
Five rigorous problem=solving contests during the course of the school year provide an opportunity to stretch our thinking and share our strategies.
Young Professors
The most important part of Olympiad is getting to share strategies and engage in mathematical discussions. Check out these professors!
Our Friends, Mr. & Madame Stick!
Mr. and Madame Stick have been a great vehicle for some very impressive mathematical writing - and CREATIVITY! We love the Sticks!
Using Integers on the Coordinate Grid to Design a Room
One way to use integers is on a coordinate grid. Check out our awesome twin bedroom designs!
The Stock Market!
Another common place to find and use integers is the Stock Market - whether it be a game or the REAL THING, we dug in and really learned a lot about the stocks and how to use integers for daily calculations of losses and gains.
Learning About the Stock Market
We watched a video and read some literature on the Stock Market to get an idea of how it all works. Then we made some short video clips with our questions to send to Mrs. Young's grandfather, an expert. He sent back answers to our questions by email.

Following Our Stock
Once we chose which company we'd like to "invest" in, we worked as a class to come up with a reasonable table to track our gains and losses. Some of us used a Google spreadsheet to record our progress, while others of us wrote out our daily results on a printed out chart. Mrs. Young was so proud of how far we'd come!!!
Integers, Shopping, and Mr. Stick
You'd have never known it was a day or two before winter break. We were hard at work, holiday shopping for Mr. Stick and keeping track of credits and debits through our creative Stick stories!
Time for Statistics......and Rovers?
What better way to take data for understanding statistics than building something that will roll varied distances? That's just what we did!

Recording & Working with the Data:
More Statistics... Not with Rovers - With US!!!
Each group decided on a survey topic, administered their survey to the class, and applied the data to various statistics standards to show the distribution of the data.
Time to plot the data:
Celebrating Pi Day!
Discovering relationships between circles and rectangles, sketching formulas, and proving 3.14 really is the ratio of diameter and circumference.
On to Algebra!
After a little challenge to get going with the language of algebra, we pulled out the S'MATH game boards to recall Order of Operations - and for some good old-fashion fun, too!
